Overview: Structured Literacy

The District of Columbia requires educators to complete literacy training aligned with the science of reading. In SY26-27, this requirement applies only to Kindergarten Lead Teachers. In future years, additional categories of Campus Instructional Team employees will be required to complete this certification.

Training Options

Option 1: OSSE/TNTP Self-paced Course

Estimated 25 hours to complete

1. Go to https://osse.pl.powerschool.com/ 

2. Log in or create an account using your DC Prep email address

3. Under Course Search, type "Science of Reading"

4. Click Register and Go to Course 

5. Complete all components

Important Information

• You do not need to complete the Onboarding Module Tracking Form if you complete this training module. OSSE will report completion to DC Prep.

Option 2: Complete the Praxis Literacy Assessment (7002)

OSSE identified Praxis 7002 as the approved Structured Literacy certification assessment. Praxis 7002 is designed to measure the knowledge and skills teachers must have to support reading and writing and is grounded in practice standards from the International Literacy Association and the International Dyslexia Association.

DC Prep will reimburse you for the cost of the exam once, upon receiving a passing score.

Important Information

• OSSE considers a score of 143 or higher as a passing score on ETS 7002

• The exam costs $85

Reimbursement Instructions

• Gather supporting documents:

  • receipt showing payment date, amount, and the name of the test

  • score report indicating a passing score 

• Ask your campus' Office Manager for a reimbursement form.

• Complete the form, and submit it with your supporting document to your Office Manager.
